We awarded Cumbria Youth Alliance £1,250 in March 2017 to support young people with physical and learning disabilities to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award.
We have been working with a group of 11 young people at South Workington Youth Partnership, seven of whom have special needs, for many weeks now.
It has been a wonderful journey and it was with great pleasure that we saw them complete their four-day Gold expedition in August. The other sections of the award (Physical, Skill, Volunteering and Residential) are all-but completed too.
The four group members who don’t have special needs assisted with the rest of the group’s needs, but as a whole, the group were ABLE to work together wonderfully – helping each other out physically, with encouragement throughout and plenty of fun along the way.
There was an incredible sense of achievement afterwards – the Gold Award is certainly not an easy thing to attain for anyone.
It is so heart-warming to be involved with projects like this, and with generous funding from organisations like DM Thomas Foundation for Young People, we can continue to help young people make a difference to their lives.
