DEMAND Design & Manufacture for Disability is a charity dedicated to helping disabled people to live life their way. Our skilled engineering and design team create custom equipment when no existing solutions are available. We fund raise so that the equipment we make is always available to those who need it, regardless of their ability to pay.
This year, thanks to a donation of £6000 from the DM Thomas Foundation for Young People, we were ABLE to manufacture 6 specialist rocking chairs for schools in our community.
The chairs were given to special needs schools whose students have a wide range of complex learning disabilities and sensory processing disorders including autism. Designed and made by our skilled workshop team, the rocking chairs provide a soothing place to go when the demands of the school day are simply too great.
Each chair has a fabric hood which restricts the light and sound, and creates an enclosed place to be alone. With space at a premium in many special needs schools, the chairs are providing a great way to give more students a chance to take some time out alone.
Nothing on the market fulfilled this need for the students, so our team designed a suitable rocking chair from scratch.
“By reducing the sensory input, light and noise, the chair has a calming effect on the children. The chair is a place they can learn to go if they feel anxious” – Children’s Occupational Therapist, Nicola Estabrook.
With time and sustained access to these chairs, it is hoped the students will learn to self-regulate and become better equipped to deal with the sensory demands made upon them.
