#IamABLE: Designability

Wizzybugs are fun and innovative powered wheelchairs designed specifically for children under five. Without a Wizzybug, children do not have the freedom to move on their own which can affect their social development as well as their mobility skills.

The Foundation has supported the Wizzybug Loan Scheme, run by Designability, since 2006, most recently awarding a grant of £9,500. Thanks to the Loan Scheme, children under five with disabilities are ABLE to experience independent movement for the very first time.

Some of the Wizzybug families share how the Loan Scheme has transformed their children’s lives:

“I was overwhelmed when I first saw him move unaided. It was awesome that he could get to places he wanted to. He loves to play hide and seek and pretends to go to the shop to buy things in it!”

“Our son was lucky enough to have collected his Wizzybug last week. My eyes teared up seeing our son move for the first time in his Wizzybug – it’s given him freedom for the first time in almost two years, to be able to chase his big sisters, and even collect them from school where they were so proud to show him off!”

“His muscles are deteriorating overtime, and we want him to enjoy his time to the fullest. Wizzybug really makes Ali a happier toddler when he’s out and about.”

“This is the first time Sebby has had the independence to go where he wants to, and he’s so happy about it. We went for a walk in a local wood with paths and we hardly walked any distance as Sebby was darting around everywhere and chuckling constantly.”
