Drake Music Scotland creates opportunities for disabled musicians of all ages. Its work includes by working with schools to teach music, providing group and one-to-one instrumental tuition, running a digital orchestra, and delivering a training programme offering recognised music qualifications for school leavers. We funded four iPads for Drake Music Scotland, supporting its creation of Scotland’s first orchestra for young people with disabilities.
Ant is 20 and takes part in music making sessions for disabled young musicians at Drake Music Scotland’s studio in Edinburgh. Over the past year, Ant has been writing his own rap song with music loops he has created using Ableton Live and the electric guitar.
Ant performed at our summer concert and also helped MC the event for us. Our concert was kindly hosted by the CRE:8 theatre space at Edinburgh College and during the interval, Ant, who uses a wheelchair, independently made his way to the College reception and took a confident immediate decision to ask if there were any courses that he might apply for. Ant’s mum Fran told us afterwards, “This confidence has definitely been nurtured and his self-esteem blossoms through many of his experiences at Drake Music Scotland. He has been ABLE to apply for a part-time course and take part in an interview, and has been accepted.“
