Kidney Kids Scotland was founded as a Charitable Trust in July 2000 to help children with renal illness and their families. Families continue to be a priority for the Charity ensuring they are supported when they most need it. These families come from all over Scotland.
Kidney Kids Scotland also supports hospitals all over Scotland supplying them with much needed equipment and funding for posts recognised as being essential. The Charity achieves this by working closely and relying on the expertise of Consultants, Medical and Welfare personnel to identify where help can best be provided. Kidney Kids Scotland has been instrumental in the funding and developing The Paediatric Renal Network in Scotland.
Since its inception, Kidney Kids Scotland has distributed over one and a half million pounds towards the treatment of children in Scotland suffering from renal/ urology problems.
At the beginning of 2015, Kidney Kids Scotland were delighted to receive £500 from the DM Thomas Foundation. This money contributed towards the annual Kidney Kids Scotland Family Weekend which approximately 26 families attend.
This weekend is for the families of children who are suffering from Nephrotic Syndrome, those facing dialysis and or transplant. Consultants and medical staff very kindly give up their leisure time to run a number of workshops on the Saturday for both children and parents. These workshops are a fantastic way for everyone to learn more about the illness they are living with on a daily basis. One of the most popular workshops is the Success Stories session where families come along to share their experience of a child who has had a successful transplant. This type of support is invaluable.
Families enjoy eating, playing and talking to others with whom they have so much in common. They also enjoy being “just a family” in the wonderful surroundings of a hotel. As well as workshops the families also have time to swim, enjoy children’s entertainment, a disco and some wonderful food.
One of the parents said: “Very grateful to Kidney Kids Scotland for the opportunity to attend. It makes you feel less isolated with your child’s condition and more positive in dealing with it”.
The charity has now run six successful family weekends. These weekends could not happen without the help of supporters like the DM Thomas Foundation.
