On the 7 July Katie and Becca from our partner Les Mills visited one of our most recent grantees. The Glamis Adventure Playground in Shadwell has existed in one form or another for many years, in fact Christine who is the deputy manager, and who met with Becca and Katie to show them around the centre remembers going there herself as a young girl.
The adventure playground is open 4 days a week, 50 weeks a year and is a fantastic local resource, serving families from the Tower Hamlets area. The playground is a wonderland of outdoor play, and as well as welcoming children of all ages the centre also offers a children’s bike workshop where they can learn to maintain and fix their bikes, an allotment which supports a food growing project, a soon to open healthy eating cafe and a range of activities specifically for girls.
Our donor-advised fund Les Mills Fund for Children, which the Foundation administers, was born out of Les Mills fitness group’s love for a fit and healthy lifestyle. They are passionate about transforming the lives of children and want to instil the next generation with a lifelong love of physical activity and learning. LMFC provided the playground with a £1,000 grant to support their activities in helping young people stay fit and healthy through surpervised outdoor play. The money was raised through various fundraising activities, including the selling of charity wrist bands at their many fitness events around the UK. They plan on more collaborative working with the playground in the future, including holding dance workshops for young people to take part in.
