Kangaroos is a registered charity based in Haywards Heath which provides a range of fun, inclusive year round clubs and trips out, in and around Mid Sussex, for children and young adults with learning disabilities and complex medical needs.
Their youngest group, PALS (Play, Activities, Laughter, Support) is a Saturday and Holiday Playscheme for children aged from 6 to 12.
A couple of years ago, they were delighted when the Foundation awarded £1,540 worth of inclusive IT Equipment to the PALS group, enabling the children to learn new skills and participate in activities that anyone of their own age group enjoys and takes for granted.
“He can be reluctant to try different activities; however, he loved playing on the computer the first time we showed it to him. His mouse skills were great and he understood the cause and effect games.” – PALS staff member
“He understood what to do straight away. After a few minutes of playing with the equipment, he could play ‘Old McDonald’ and ‘Twinkle Twinkle’. It was amazing to see a child with limited communication articulate himself so well through music.” – PALS staff member
“Due to his severe visual impairment he can find engaging in an activity difficult, however he quickly understood if he put his hand on the switch it made a noise. This is great in increasing his knowledge of his environment.” – PALS staff member
Update September 2016: “We have continued to use the IT equipment and have seen the children’s skills progress greatly, especially their knowledge of cause and effect, concentration and mouse skills. We are so very grateful for the grant that we were awarded” – Lorna Herrett – Delivery Manager – PALS
